Dar el Bacha Museum
Dar el Bacha Museum
Marrakech is known for its many beautiful Riads, such as Riad Orange and palaces that are richly decorated with its beautiful floors and walls. If you like photography, you can shoot beautiful pictures. For example, many tourists choose to visit the Bahia Palace. This has become one of the biggest attractions of Marrakech. Nevertheless, the less well-attended Dar el Bacha Museum is at least as beautiful, and has the great advantage that there are no crowds of visitors present. You can enjoy in peace the beauty of the former palace of the Passover (mayor) of Marrakech: Thami el Glaoui.
The Glaoui brothers belonged to a Berber tribe from the High Atlas and had a beautiful Kasbah in Telouet. This can be visited during our excursion “Telouet & Ait Bin Haddou”. They decided to work with the French to maintain and strengthen their position in southern Morocco, and together to overcome the Berber tribe of the Ait Atta. This collaboration did them no harm and they were given, for example, the exclusive right over the salt mines in the Atlas Mountains. Their new wealth translated into theabolition of sports cars and the construction of even morepalaces and kasbahs. When appointing mayor of Marrakech, Thami wanted an even more beautiful palace than the Bahia palace.
The style of the Dar el Bacha museum
Thus, thami el Glaoui had his new town house renovated in the 20s by the best craftsmen in the country. This resulted in a beautiful palace where the same room as in Telouet has been reconstructed. The cedar handmade ceilings are painted with natural pigments such as Saffron and Indigo. The floors and walls are richly covered with zellige. Everywhere the geometric shapes and the beautiful floral motifs are visible.
In the middle of the palace is a spacious garden surrounded by salons. The fruittrees give cooling in the form of shade and you imagine yourself in royal atmospheres. During the time he was Pasha of Marrakech, the palace was visited by international statesmen, such as Churchill, to attend one of the extravagant parties. And ook Charlie Chaplin and Josefine Baker have left their footprints there.
Nowadays, the Dar el Bacha museum is open to the public and regularly has an exhibition with international allure. You can also drink delicious coffee in eand former and beautifulsalon. As a souvenir you can have the coffee beans freshly ground at the adjacent shop Bacha coffee (www.bachacoffee.com). That makes the visit to this palace a unique experience!
